چکیده

Under dehydration conditions, amphipathic Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins fold spontaneously from a random conformation into α-helical structures and this transition is promoted by the presence of membranes. To gain insight into the thermodynamics of membrane association we model the resulting α-helical structures as infinite rigid cylinders patterned with hydrophobic and hydrophilic stripes oriented parallel to their axis. Statistical thermodynamic calculations using Single Chain Mean Field (SCMF) theory show that the relative thickness of the stripes controls the free energy of interaction of the α-helices with a phospholipid bilayer, as does the bilayer structure and the depth of the equilibrium penetration of the cylinders into the bilayer. The results may suggest the optimal thickness of the stripes to mimic the association of such protein with membranes.

Mapping of the forces on biomolecules in cell membranes has spurred the development of effective labels, e.g. organic fluorophores and nanoparticles, to track trajectories of single biomolecules. Standard methods use particular statistics, namely the mean square displacement, to analyze the underlying dynamics. Here, we introduce general inference methods to fully exploit information in the exp...

Photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B by nano bismuth oxide: Process modeling by response surface methodology (RSM)

The photocatalytic activity of nano-Bi2O3 was evaluated in degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) as a model of dye pollutant from waste waters. Nano sized Bi2O3 was synthesized using the chemical precipitation method. The as-prepared sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spect...

A Novel Homogeneous Fenton-like System with Fe(III)-Phosphotungstate for Oxidation of Organic Compounds at Neutral pH Values.

Ferric ion (Fe[III]) catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) into strong oxidants such as hydroxyl radical ((•)OH) and ferryl ion (Fe[IV]) through the redox cycling of the iron couple (Fe[II]/Fe[III]). The use of these reactions for the catalytic oxidation of organic compounds is usually limited to the acidic pH region due to the low solubility of Fe(III) and the low efficie...
